The Eightstreets History is under construction, but for now we have some interesting links for you to follow. (each will open up in a new window)
- A History of the Filling In of the South End. Eightstreets is the turqouise in the center. (The turquiose with hash marks is Castle Square) Eightstreets was filled in in the 1820's and 1830's.
- An old map (1897, Rand McNally). Eightstreets is in the lower left. Nothing too exciting in eightstreets, but you can see where other streets used to be - You can see where streets have been replaced by Peters Park, Castle Square and Mass Pike Towers
- A 1903 photograph of the ESNA neighbourhood. Photo is taken from the North end of Milford St. The Cyclorama can be seen on the left of the photo. If you scroll to the far right, the building on the corner how houses the Athens Market. The 'curved' building in the center is The Hotel Clarendon and the white building on the right is The Oddfellows Hall; both burned down in the early 1900's Given the age of the photo I think the empty lot is where the National Theater will be. And, of course, the lovely trolley rumbling down Tremont st...
